NEWS- The Police in Rukungiri District are investigating circumstances that caused an accident that left one person dead.
The accident happened at Kabingo Cell, Eastern ward Kebisoni Town council Rukungiri district, along Rukungiri Ntungamo road when an unknown motorvehicle knocked and killed a male adult pedestrian.
The deceased has been identified by the Kigezi Region Police Spokesman ASP Elly Maate as Akankwasa Bruce a 25 year old Munyankore Taxi conductor and resident of Marumba B, Kanyinya ward southern division in Rukungiri municipality/district.
According to Maate, it’s alleged that the deceased disappeared from home Marumba B cell on the previous evening due to mental health which the relatives claim.
It is further alleged that, an unknown speeding vehicle from the side of Rwashamire heading to Kebisoni Town council ran over him in the middle of the road, killing him on spot.
Maate confided to the press that the scene was visited and documented; the body was taken to Rwakabengo health center III mortuary for postmortem examination as inquiries are at hand.
In a related development, the Police in Rubanda District also on Friday 28th December 2023 registered a fatal accident that claimed a pedal cyclist’s life.
It is said that on the fateful day at around 8Pm at Kabirizi cell, Nyarurambi ward, Rubanda town council along Kabale Kisoro road in Rubanda district, yet to be identified motorcycle and bicycle were whisked from the scene and hidden by unknown people.
However, ASP Elly Maate the Kigezi Region Police Spokesman identified the deceased as Ampumwize Alex of around 24 years, resident of Mukatasa cell, Nyarurambi ward, Rubanda town council in Rubanda district (pedalcyclist, deceased) and Ruhangariyo Sam 30 years old resident of Mukibungo village, Kaara parish, Muko sub county in Rubanda district.
It’s alleged that both the motorcycle and pedalcyclist were facing the same direction of Kisoro from Kabale with the former following the latter at a high speed hence lost control of the cycle and knocked the pedalcyclist from behind.
It’s further alleged that both fell down on the road and sustained serious injuries. They were later rushed to Humurwa medical clinic at Rubanda town by good Samaritans from where the pedalcyclist was pronounced dead due to severe injuries. The rider was transferred to Kabale regional referral hospital while in critical condition.
Maate told the press that the accident could have been a result of reckless riding and over speeding by the motorcycle rider.
The Scene was visited by Police, postmortem was done and body handed over to relatives for burial as efforts to have the motorcycle and bicycle recovered and brought to police are underway.
