KAMPALA- According to the police, at least 55 people lost their lives in Uganda under various circumstances during the three-day period spanning Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and Boxing Day.
Among the incidents, 12 were victims of assault, three were hacked to death, two drowned, two were lynched and seven were hit with blunt objects. The 55 fatalities occurred between December 24 and 26th during the Christmas period.
Six other people were stabbed to death, while five committed suicide, two were strangled to death, eight died from suspected sudden death, four fatalities resulted from reckless and negligent acts, one person died from food poisoning, one suspected arson case was reported, and two people were murdered, with the cause still under.
According to the police report, the 55 fatalities resulted from 91 reported cases, marking a decrease from the 110 cases recorded during the same period in 2023. This reduction indicates a positive trend in safety during the holiday season.
Assistant Commissioner of Police, Kituuma Rusoke, has said police have apprehended 19 suspects in the said murders. Despite the reported incidents, the police spokesperson noted that the Christmas period was generally peaceful across the country.

Notably, among the incidents reported, there was one death resulting from a kidnapping for ransom case. According to Kituuma, although the toddler was killed, the kidnapping case took a progress, when the mother received a ransom demand of 15 million shillings from the kidnappers, prompting her to report the incident to the police.
“Utilizing their intelligence capabilities, security forces successfully tracked and apprehended the suspect, Ivan Natukunda, on December 24. During our interrogation, Natukunda revealed that the four-year-old victim had been murdered by the prime suspect, Robert Rwabajungu, alias Kadeyideyi. Both suspects are currently in police custody,” Rusoke stated.
