NEWS- President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has emphasized the need for graduates to tap into the available opportunities in commercial agriculture, industry, ICT and the services sector to create wealth for their own transformation and that of the country.
The massage was contained in a speech read by the Vice President Major Jessica Alupo Epel who represented President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni at the 15th graduation ceremony of The Mountains of the Moon University in Fortportal City where 642 students graduated with Certificates, Diplomas and Degrees in various disciplines.
President Museveni, congratulated the graduants upon their important achievement in their lives and called upon them to use the skills they have acquired at the University to transform their lives for better.
During the same event, Vice President Major Jessica Alupo Epel installed Professor Edward Rugumayo as the First Chancellor of Mountains of the Moon University at the ceremony held at the University Main Campus in Saaka in Fort Portal City.
Prof Rugumayo was appointed as Chancellor by President Museveni in 2020 to serve for a four-year term of office and his appointment followed the recommendation of the University Council, based on section 30(1) of the Universities and Tertiary Institutions Act, 2001 as amended.
His appointment came two months after the University was taken over by the government as a public institution, and being one of the co-founders of the institution in 2005, Professor Rugumayo had served in a similar capacity before the institution was taken over by the Government as a public university.
Professor Rugumayo holds a Diploma in Education from Chester College in the United Kingdom and a Bachelor of Science in Botany and Ecology from the University of London and after the Uganda National Liberation Army (UNLA) and the Uganda National Liberation Front (UNLF) captured power, Prof Rugumayo became the chairman of the National Consultative Council (NCC) which was the Parliament of Uganda at the time.
Prof Rugumayo served as Minister of Education in 1971, Chairman of the National Consultative Council in 1979, Uganda’s first Ambassador to South Africa in 1996, Minister of Internal Affairs in 1999, and Minister of TourismTrade and Industry in 2000 until he retired to concentrate on private practice.
