Residents of Nyarushaje sub-county in Rukungiri district are mourning after three people were swept away by flood waters following heavy rainfall that caused flooding in Kyakabarasinga cell, Ibanda parish, in Nyarushaje sub-county.
Kyakabarasinga cell Chairperson Justus Ngabirano said they received what he described as harsh rains yesterday, which destroyed residents’ property and carried away men who were allegedly burning charcoal in the hills.
He added that two bodies were recovered, while the third one was recovered this morning. Among the two recovered yesterday, he said there was also a student from a technical school within the area.

In addition, LC3 Chairman for Nyarushaje sub-county, Michael Musiime, noted that most of the incidents in the area are linked to environmental degradation and increasing population. He explained that Nyarushaje is hilly, and that human settlement on slopes has increased pressure on the land.
Musiime said that two parishes of Bunono and Ibanda were affected by yesterday’s incident. He added that they have recorded twelve deceased people from eight cells from similar past incidents.
He urged residents living near the hills to stop digging slopes and avoid burning grass, to prevent landslides and erosion.
