The National Council of Sports General Secretary Dr Patrick Ogwel has reaffirmed that Akii Bua Stadium in Lira City will be ready to host the 2027 AFCON.
This follows an inspection by Parliament’s Committee on Education and Sports that found the stadium at 84% complete, with 87% of the project expenditure already incurred and construction is expected to be completed by January 2nd 2027.
SAMCO Technical Eng Shara Ajok said drainage works are 78% complete, while roads around the stadium are at 40%, but the MPs raised concerns over the pace of road construction and other supporting infrastructure.
Ogwel said more than 1,000 local people from Lango are employed on the project and urged Lira City authorities to complete infrastructure under their mandate.
He also disclosed that discussions are ongoing over a proposed five-star hotel in Lira City to accommodate visitors, with National Council of Sports awaiting government support for funding.
The inspection comes as Uganda prepares to co-host AFCON 2027 with Kenya and Tanzania with just months remaining before the tournament.
