NEWS- A tragic landslide incident on Tuesday night claimed the life of Arinaitwe Innocent, a 17-year-old resident of Kiziba Cell, Kinaba Sub County in Kanungu District,.
Sources from the area indicate that heavy rains were experienced in the area from approximately 10pm and continued throughout the night until around 5am the following morning.
Its further said that during the night, a hill near the residence of Silver Tugabirwe, the father of the deceased, experienced a mudslide that demolished the structure where Arinaitwe was sleeping.
The entire area suffered damages, with houses developing cracks due to the force of the mudslide.
Despite efforts from the parents and supportive neighbors, efforts to rescue Arinaitwe were unsuccessful and his lifeless body was eventually recovered.
Byamukama Robert, the Area village Chairperson expressed shock at the intensity of the mudslide, noting it even caused serious damage to roads.
By press time, Police had not yet visited the scene, and preparations for the burial, scheduled for Thursday, December 7, 2023, were underway.
Tumukurate Chrysostom, the Kinaba Sub County Chairperson voiced concern about the recurring threat of mudslides in the area during the rainy seasons. Tumukurate acknowledged that the government’s response to such incidents is a lengthy process to help the affected residents and community.
The Sub County Boss advised locals to avoid residing in areas prone to landslides and to refrain from cultivating in wetlands, as this disrupts drainage patterns. He emphasized the need for community education to raise awareness about challenges associated with heavy rainfall.
It should be noted that another landslide hit Kisoro district in the same night and claimed the lives of two people.
