NEWS– The territorial police in the Rwenzori East Policing Region (Kasese district) have detained a man on allegations of holding an unlawful protest against the implementation of the Universal Primary Education (U.P.E) programme in Uganda.

SP Nelson Tumushime, the Regional Police Spokesperson has confirmed the development to our reporter and identified the suspect as William Bagome Kalonge, a resident of Maliba Sub-county in Busongora County North.

According to Tumushime, Kalonge was arrested yesterday at the RDC’s office in Kasese town while holding a placard written on “Close U.P.E 2026,” and detained at Kasese Central Police station where he has been charged with public nuisance and inciting violence.

The Regional Police Mouthpiece says they have completed processing the suspect’s file, adding that they will submit it to the Resident State Attorney tomorrow morning for legal advice.

He has since warned the public against the practice of putting the law into their hands.

Before his arrest, Kalonge who was seen roaming at the RDC’s office was heard saying that instead of helping children, U.P.E only destroys their foundation in education.
