KABALE- Judith Nakayima, Assistant Program Officer for Voice and Participation at Twaweza East Africa, has called for cooperation between people in authority and the government to bring about change in communities.
Nakayima made the call this week at the closing ceremony of a three-day refresher training workshop held at Agaba Center in Central Division, Kabale Municipality.
The workshop was organized by Literacy Action and Development Agency (LADA), which is implementing a program in Rubanda District, aimed at reaching out to vulnerable households and communities through advocacy, economic empowerment, health, education, and environmental programs.
The ultimate goal is to bring sustainable livelihoods to households and communities.
Nakayima noted that some community members lack access to responsible offices where they can address their concerns and observed that others often fail to participate in village meetings because they expect to be facilitated for their attendance, making it challenging for local councils to convene these meetings.
Mrs. Nakayima believes that cooperation between the community and authorities is crucial for bringing about change.
Some beneficiaries of the program, including Jorum Safari, Speaker of Bufundi Sub-County in Rubanda West Constituency, and Mrs. Edith Asiimwe, a change agent from Kashasha Town Council, shared testimonies on how Twaweza and LADA have empowered their communities through education, health, environment, disaster management, and other initiatives.
However, they challenged Twaweza and LADA to provide more substantial support, such as constructing wells, health facilities, and educational infrastructure, as most community members are low-income earners.
