NEWS- Over 20 members of the Forum for Democratic Change FDC from Rukungiri Municipality over the weekend defected to the National Resistance Movement NRM as time ticks closer to the 2026 general elections.

These were welcomed by Council Isaac Atukunda who is eyeing the Rukungiri Municipality Parliamentary seat on the NRM ticket at Riverside Hotel in Eastern Division, Rukungiri Municipality.

Among the defectors is Joseph Arinaitwe who had contested for the Eastern Division Municipal council representation but lost the contest to an NRM counterpart.

Arinaitwe who confessed that the time he has supported the FDC has been a waste affirmed his commitment to serve the NRM pledging to mobilise for it since it’s envisioned to see Ugandans succeed.

Kamuhangire Augustine, Kyomugisha Beatrice among other defectors pointed out that they have supported several leaders who have not yielded anything valuable to the society stressing that they have already identified an able leader in Counsel Isaac as far as service delivery is concerned.

The defectors stressed that other previous leaders who would thereafter forget them since most of them were born from other sub counties in the district with trust that since Atukunda is born and raised from the Municipality, he is the right choice to lead them.

They noted that they were moved by Counsel Isaac’s genuine contribution to the community especially renovation of some water sources that had been unoperational for years as well supporting education through the Atukunda Education Trust that is facilitating education of a number of learners across the Municipality.

On his turn, Counsel Isaac Atukunda hailed the defectors for having seen the light and crossing to the party that is envisioned to see Ugandans prosper stressing that the party’s goal is to create more employment opportunities through industrialization and value addition on agricultural products.

Sharing an experience of his journey, Counsel Isaac pointed out that through his already existing relationships; he has been able to establish youths Sacco to help boost their social economic welfare.

He lectured them on the benefits of supporting the ruling NRM party pointing out that it’s the right channel to keep the motivation in the incentives he has already started on like renovating water sources to reduce sicknesses and expenditure on medication as well as supporting the education of needy children.

Counsel Atukunda noted that he will soon present them to the Municipality and district Party Chairmen for commissioning and orientation on the party norms and culture.
