The Deputy Speaker of Parliament Rt Hon Thomas Tayebwa has appealed to the East African Community (EAC) member states to fast-track the harmonisation of laws and policies across the region if the integration agenda is to be realised.
Rt Hon Tayebwa pointed out that critical among the policies, is the elimination of non-tariff barriers to ease the free movement of goods and services.
He also emphasised the need for member states to collectively strengthen parliamentary oversight on government institutions to bring services closer to the people and directly engage citizens as the true owners of the integration.
“As Member States, we need to move away from boardroom deliberations meetings and go for deliveries,” Rt Hon Tayebwa said.
Rt Hon Tayebwa was speaking at the official launch of the East African Community Parliamentary Week at Parliament under the theme: “Advancing the East African Community agenda through legislative dialogue.”
During the engagement, key highlights and discussions included Legislative Harmonization and Deputy Speaker Tayebwa urged member states to fast-track regional policies and eliminate non-tariff barriers to enable the free movement of goods and services.
He also asked Lawmakers to focus heavily on strengthening oversight of regional integration initiatives and ensuring citizens are actively engaged.
