Speaker Ms Nakasi Betty Hope has been remanded over corruption

The Anti-Corruption Court has remanded the former Mukono District Speaker Ms Nakasi Betty Hope, after being arraigned before the Court over allegations of soliciting money in connection with a government job promotion.

Ms Nakasi was brought before the Anti-Corruption Court this afternoon by the State House Anti-Corruption Unit (SH-ACU), working jointly with the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID) and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP).

The court action follows investigations into allegations surrounding the illegal sale of government jobs in Mukono Local Government, with the latest case focusing on an alleged Ugx 2 million payment demanded from a government official.

According to the allegations, on 30th June 2025, at the Mukono District Local Government Headquarters, Ms Nakasi, together with other individuals who are still at large, allegedly solicited Ugx 2 million from the then Procurement Officer of Buikwe District.

The prosecution alleges that Ms Nakasi claimed she could use her influence over the Mukono District Service Commission to help the officer secure promotion to the position of Senior Procurement Officer, Mukono District, in exchange for the money and she has been remanded until 21st October 2026 as the case proceeds.

The arrest and subsequent court appearance form part of investigations by the State House Anti-Corruption Unit into complaints of extortion and alleged manipulation of recruitment and promotion processes within Mukono Local Government.

The investigations have also focused on allegations involving members of the District Service Commission and some political actors in the district.

The State House Anti-Corruption Unit has continued to work with law-enforcement and prosecutorial agencies to investigate complaints of corruption and ensure that suspects are brought before courts where evidence supports prosecution.

The latest action also reinforces President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni’s repeated warnings against the illegal sale of government jobs and his directive to relevant authorities to  take action against individuals who demand money from citizens in exchange for employment or advancement in public service.

Government recruitment and promotion processes are required to follow established procedures based on merit and the applicable laws governing the public service.
