NEWS– A German tourist has died while the second one and their driver were injured when the vehicle they traveling in got involved in a road accident on Saturday morning at Kabaraga village, Kyanamira Sub County along Kabale – Mbarara highway.
Kigezi Regional Police Spokesman ASP Elly Maate confirmed the accident and identified the deceased as 58 year old Doctor Wendsche Ralf Steffen from Germany while the injured include 48 year old Ms Silk Venus also a tourist from Germany and Nyombi Morgan, a resident of Murungu – Munyonyo in Kampala District and a driver of Kibo Slopes Uganda Limited.
Maate told journalists that a tourist vehicle registration number UAX 567C Toyota Landcruiser was coming from Bwindi Gorilla Valley heading to Kampala, when it reached at Kabaraga corner, a speeding Fuso Lorry reistration number UBH 009B which was coming from Mbarara side, over took another vehicle not yet known by its number and in the process, knocked the tourist vehicle leading to the death of one tourist while the other one and their driver sustained injuries.
The scene of the accident was visited and documented by Kigezi Regional Police Commander, Saiga Ibrahim assisted by Regional Traffic Officer Betubiza Fabian and Kabale District Traffic Officer Mucunguzi who rescued the injured victims and rushed them to Kabale Regional Referral Hospital for treatment. The body of the deceased was conveyed to the same Hospital Mortuary for postmortem examination.
Maate said that that the case of the accident has been registered at Kabale Central Police Station under reference number TAR: 001/2024, vehicle is parked pending Inspector of Vehicles (IOV) inspection as investigations continue.
