The Prime Minister Rt Hon Robinah Nabbanja has revealed that Cabinet has agreed to allocate funds for facelifting the Uganda Martyrs shrines as Tourism sites across the country.
Rt Hon Nabbanja Robinah made this revelation on Sunday May 25th 2025 afternoon during the climax of the pilgrimage at Kooki Haibaale, a Catholic Martyrs shrine where St Andrea Kaahwa was born in Kakumiro Sistrict in Bunyoro subregion.
This comes as Uganda is preparing to celebrate the Uganda Martyrs Day on 3rd June in remembrance of the Martyrs who were burnt to death on the orders of King Mwanga of Buganda.
The is highly revered in Uganda and is celebrated worldwide as Christians trek from different parts of the country to Uganda Martyrs Shrine Namugongo to mark the day, and thousands of pilgrims from Bunyoro Sub-region gathered at Kooki Haibaale, where St Andrea Kaahwa was born to start their pilgrimage.
Although born in Kakumiro, St Andrea Kaahwa is one the of the Uganda Martyrs who was killed at Munyonyo in Kampala.
The Holy mass was led by the Bishop of Hoima Diocese Rt Rev Vincent Kirabo Amooti together with the Bishop of Fort Portal Rt Rev Robert Muhirwa Akiiki.
Andrea Kaahwa commonly known as Andrew Kaggwa was a Munyoro by tribe and some Leaders of Bunyoro now want the Catholic Church to consider using the Runyoro name instead using Andrew Kaggwa the Luganda name.
The Prime Minister on behalf of government also promised to tarmac the road leading to and around the shrine and donated Ugx 10 million towards the facelifting of the shrine.
The Colourful ceremony was also attended by Public service State Minister Mary Mugasa, a cross sections of Members of Parliament especially from Bunyoro Sub-region, local leaders and pilgrims from Germany among others.
