Musasizi speaking at the Global Entrepreneurship Week at Hotel Africana

KAMPALA- The Minister of State for Finance, Henry Musasizi, has confirmed a hacking incident at the Bank of Uganda and stated that a report on the matter will be ready within a month.

Musasizi made the confirmation that after the Leader of Opposition, Joel Ssenyonyi, raised a matter of national importance on the floor of Parliament, calling on the government to address ongoing media allegations that hackers had breached the Bank of Uganda and stolen between 48 and 62 billion shillings.

The hackers, identifying themselves as “Waste,” reportedly accessed the Bank of Uganda’s IT systems and illicitly transferred the funds earlier this month.

The hacking group based in Southeast Asia, sent part of the stolen money to Japan according to the media reports.

In response, Musasizi acknowledged the incident, explaining that investigations by the Auditor General to determine the exact amount lost, as well as ongoing inquiries by CID, are still underway.

However, Ssenyonyi was not satisfied with the response and demanded that Musasizi provide a specific timeline for the completion of the investigation to which Musasizi reported that it is expected in a month.
