KAMPALA- The government, in partnership with the World Bank, is rolling out a $354.7 million Smart Agricultural Transformation Project aimed at revolutionizing farming practices across 69 districts in Uganda.
This six-year initiative seeks to empower farmers to adopt climate-smart techniques to boost production, enhance resilience, improve market access, and secure food supply in the face of climate change.
The project will also focus on fostering sustainable practices among farmer groups, cooperatives, and even refugee settlements.
Speaking during a media briefing, Alex Asiimwe, Deputy Coordinator of the Uganda Climate Smart Agricultural Transformation Project Under the Ministry of Agriculture revealed that the program targets organized farmer groups and cooperatives, adding that beneficiaries are required to contribute 20% of the project funding and provide land to facilitate implementation.
The initiative is expected to transform Uganda’s agriculture sector, strengthen food security, and uplift the livelihoods of thousands of farming households.
