NEWS- Security teams in Rukungiri District are actively investigating circumstances under which a Police officer lost a gun to thugs.
The incident according to a statement released by the Resident District Commissioner Stephen Nsubuga Bewayo happened on 20th January 2025 in Nyakaina Central cell, Nyakaina ward in Buyanja town council.
According to Bewayo, the head of the District security, on 19th January 2025 at about 8:25PM when No:70464 PC Adriko Benard attached to FFU-Rukungiri Police Detach was at his guard beat alone of Kabale University -Rukungiri Campus, unknown 3 assailants attacked and assaulted him badly.
During the assault, they over powered him and robbed an AK 47 RIFFLE from him serial number UG Pol 565810907 loaded with 30 rounds of ammunition and went with it.
Bewayo added that Adriko rushed inside his room and picked another gun belonging to his colleague PC Mulondo Arafat who wasn’t on duty and shot 4 bullets but the robbers had taken off.
He immediately informed the OC station Buyanja for help and later Rukungiri CPS.
ASP Muzeeyi OC Buyanja police station and his team took immediate response to the scene however found the assailants had already gone.
A team of Police officers led by ASP Kisakye Michael, OC Station Rukungiri District, D/CIO, D/SOCO, K-9 also responded with immediate effect after notification.
K-9 tracked up to the tarmac road from Rukungiri -Ntungamo highway all in vain. Security thereafter surrounded areas and premises searched though no gun was recovered.
The officer No.70464 PC Adriko Benard was arrested, Suspects still on run with a gun as efforts are ongoing to recover the robbed gun.
This is not the first time guns are being stolen in the district. In January 2024, an unidentified assailant assaulted Mugyenyi, causing injuries, and stole his pump-action gun (UG PSO 07318-03821) along with one round of ammunition.
The incident reportedly occurred on January 19, 2024, at approximately 01:00 AM while Mugyenyi was on duty at Bwangu Investment Mukwano Depot within Rukungiri municipality.
