A heavy downpour that hit three villages within Rubaare Town Council has destroyed crop gardens, leaving residents stranded and crying out for help from leaders and relevant authorities.

The downpour, which occurred across villages including Kabirizi, Nyeihanga in Kyabukuju Ward, and Nyamurindira in Nyamurindira Ward, began at approximately 3:35 PM on Friday. It lasted for about one hour, broke for 20 minutes, and later resumed for an additional 45 minutes. By the time it stopped, gardens were left bare and crops had been heavily damaged.

The affected crop gardens include maize, sweet potatoes, cassava, sorghum, beans, and banana plantations. In addition, roofing materials on some houses were blown off due to the strong winds that accompanied the rainfall.

Ms. Anah Twijukye, a peasant and resident of Nyeihanga Cell in Kyabukuju Ward, said her two acres of bean garden together with cassava were destroyed, leaving her with no option but to struggle to feed her grandchildren.

Niwagaba Nickson, whose house was partially torn off, and Enid Kyohangirwe, residents of Nyamurindira Cell in Nyamurindira Ward, also reported that their entire acres of crop gardens were destroyed. They said they are now unable to adequately care for their families due to the scale of the losses.

They appealed to their leaders to amplify their voices to the concerned authorities so that assistance reaches them in time. They added that without support such as food and seedlings to replant, they fear a bleak future.

Responding, Mayor Venny Byakatonda of Rubaare Town Council asked the affected residents to remain calm, stating that he would consult the disaster management team at the district level to respond to the situation.

Meanwhile, Councilor Chrispus Mwesigye, representing Rubaare Town Council in Ntungamo District Council, and Councilor representing Kyabukuju Ward at Rubaare Town Council, expressed concern over the catastrophe. They urged residents to stay calm as they plan to mobilize and follow up to ensure relief reaches those affected.
