Man devastated in garden after hailstorm

NTUNGAMO- The residents of Rukoni West Sub County, Ruhaama East County-Ntungamo district are in a devastated shock wave after a heavy downpour and windstorms that destroyed their gardens, like bean gardens, coffee plantations, banana plantations, onion gardens and deroofed some homes, churches and schools.

The cells affected include; Nyakabale  I, Kigomero, Kanonko cell, Kitogotsi I, Kitogotsi II and Kitogotsi III, Rwensinga cell, Kakindo cell and Ruhanga cell.

The LC III Rukoni West Sub County Mr Mwine Frank acknowledged the disaster that ravaged his sub county, stressing that without government intervention some people in few days to come will be thieves due to lack of food security.

Mr Mwine said, on 27 th March 2025 the heavy downpour, snow and windstorms that lasted for like an hour in Rukoni parish in Rukoni West Sub County destroyed crop gardens, deroofed homes, schools and church buildings leaving the dwellers in misery situation. He added that on 2nd April Wednesday 2025 the same catastrophe ravaged Nyakabale parish and left everyone in limbo.

He call upon the the leaders mostly the area Member of Parliament Hon Benjamin Katangura Kamukama, LCV chairperson Ntungamo district Samuel Muchunguzi Rwakigoba to contact the responsible authorities to intervene.

The Rukoni West Sub County speaker Mr Otim Mayrs  re echoed the sentiment of the LC III Rukoni West Sub County chairperson, calling up on the government of Uganda mostly the office the prime minister and office of the disaster and preparedness to come on with a quick resolution over the disaster.

Ms Ruth Twebaze Kabeera, a resident of Nyakabale I, Nyakabale parish whose crops in the garden has been washed away by the running water and bog flooded snow that whisked plantations is regretting for her labour put in during garden preparations. She urged government intervention.

The LC I chairperson Kanonko cell feel repentant for the catastrophe that racked havoc to the area, stressing that the government should intervene and provide them with relief items like, maize flour, beans among others.

He added that at least the disaster victim be compensated with 100kgs of Maize flour and 50kgs of beans because some will have to replant in their gardens.

Mr Dan Mwebesa a farmer and a resident of Kanonko cell, Nyakabale parish decried the inputs in raising his crops in the gardens that were washed and destroyed by floodwaters at the premature stage.

Mr Benon Kangume another farmer said he was expecting to harvest much this season but due to the devastating weather change will not manage.

He added that he used to get school fees for his children from his coffee shambers and banana plantation but his source of income was cut off by the relenting downpour in the sub county.

Rukoni West Sub County is comprised of two parishes Nyakabale parish with 11 cells and Rukoni parish with 14 cells.

Eight cells were mostly affected in Nyakabale parish as well as 12 cells in Rukoni parish.
