SOUTH AFRICA- As we officially welcome 2025, we can’t fail look back at what defined the 2024 entertainment industry in the South African Nation.
Here at www.informer.co.ug, we are looking back on the highs and lows that defined 2024.
We start on the sad note. The past year saw the passing of local prominent figures and stars that touched the lives and hearts of generations of South Africans.
From the announcement of celebrated TV villain Michelle Botes’ passing on 21 December 2024 to shockingly sudden deaths like losing actor Mpho Sebeng to a tragic car accident, these were the notable figures Mzansi lost in 2024.
1. Zanele Mkobazi-Nkambule
Ukhozi FM presenter and co-founder of the Crown Gospel Awards founder Zanele Mbokazi-Nkambule passed away in August in Durban after battling lung cancer at 52 years old.
Survived by her husband Bishop Mpendulo Nkambule and two children, Zanele inspired hope through her life coaching and the books she authored.
2. Jessica Mbangeni
Renowned praise poet Bishop Jessica Mbangeni died on 31 August at 47 years old after a short illness.
The Eastern Cape-born poet was known for her earth-shattering performances at prestigious ceremonies and had been blessing these events with her captivating praise poetry since finding fame with the Soweto Gospel Choir after joining in 2002.
3. Connie Chiume
Connie Chiume is a figure in South African entertainment that will never be forgotten, with roles in Rhythm City, Gomora, Black Panther and more showcasing her undeniable talent.
The 72-year-old passed away on 6 August at the Garden City Hospital in Johannesburg, leaving the country stunned.
4. Mpho Sebeng
The Savage Beauty actor was only 30 years old when died in a car accident on 5 May.
His stellar contributions to the world of South African entertainment haven’t gone unnoticed, with the late actor posthumously winning the South African Film and Television Award for Best Supporting Actor in a Telenovela at the 18th annual SAFTAs ceremony.
5. Thabiso Sikwane
On 31 August 2024, the Matladi and Sikwane families released a joint statement announcing Thabiso Sikwane’s passing, which was due to a cardiac event at 47 years old.
Thabiso is remembered as a season radio and TV personality, businesswoman and author whose ex-husband, Thato ‘DJ Fresh’ Sikwane, her family and her supporters remember her for her humility, service and love for people from all walks of life.
6. Solly Moholo
Famed gospel icon Solly Moholo died at 65 years old on 2 October after being in hospital for weeks and falling ill while on tour in Botswana in September.
Solly touched generations of South Africans hearts since the early 2000s with his music style inspired by the Mokhukhu singers associated with the Zion Christian Church.
7. Michelle Botes
Isidingo and Binnelanders actress Michelle Botes’ passing was confirmed on 21 December at the age of 62 after powering through a diagnosis of a rare and incurable form of blood cancer.
Michelle was famous for her legendary portrayal of Cherel de Villiers-Haines, the diabolical villain in Isidingo and gained even more critical acclaim for her role as Angelique Price in the drama series Legacy.
8. Tito Mboweni
The former governor of the South African Reserve Bank, Tito Mboweni, succumbed to a short illness with a statement from the Ministry of Finance announcing his passing on 12 October.
He was remembered for his work in the country’s young democratic reserve bank and, in more recent years, his endearing food posts on social media.
9. Pastor Ray McCauley
Rema Bible Church’s Pastor Ray McCauley died on 8 October with public figures like Basetsana Kumalo and more paying tribute to the minister at his funeral service.
He passed away aged 75 at his home surrounded by his loved ones.
10. Malome Vector
Award-winning Sotho rapper Bokang ‘Malome Vector’ Moleli passed away in a car accident on the N1 in the Free State in July at just 32 years old.
The Lesotho-born rapper rose to fame since signing to Ambitiouz Entertainment and was known for hits like Motho Waka and Ichu.
