Ruhinda residents at Rukungiri Court

NEWS- The High Court in Rukungiri is scheduled to visit to Ruhinda sub-county on Friday, September 13th, 2024, to inspect the lands where residents allege that there was damage during a wetland restoration program by Rukungiri district officials.

This followed the directive from the Rukungiri high court resident judge Tom Chemutai emphasizing the importance of first-hand assessment before proceeding with the case, aimed at making an informed decision regarding the disputed wetlands.

According to the 3rd September letter signed by Her worship Oliver Nantamu, the Ass registrar Rukungiri high court addressed to village chairpersons of the affected villages disclosed that the trial Judge of high court of Uganda Rukungiri office will be visiting the disputed land in the affected areas on 13th September 2024 at 10am .

Counsel Arinaitwe Peter, the managing partner of Counsel Arinaitwe Peter and co -advocates leading the legal team for the residents, highlighted the significance of this step, suggesting it would provide clarity amid conflicting claims.

Residents filed a lawsuit against Rukungiri District Local Government and three government officials, alleging unlawful property destruction during wetland demarcation and restoration in Ruhinda Sub-County.

The legal team is now seeking a declaration of illegality and violation of human rights, along with compensation totaling Ugx 5 billion for affected residents.

One of the lead complainants Johnbosco Turyahabwe asked residents whose property was affected to turn up and meet the Rukungiri high court officials who are set to visit their area for assessment in regard to resolving their issues.

The areas include Rwamugooma, Kichwamba, Burombe and Kashenyi among other areas.
