Police in Nansana have kicked off investigations into circumstances under which men dressed in UPDF uniforms attacked a bank agent and robbed him of shs80 million that he was taking to the bank.
In an incident that happened on Monday, Ronald Sserugga,38, a centenary bank agent and resident of Kawanda Kirinyabigo village in Wakiso district was waylaid by four men dressed in army uniforms as he drove to the city centre to bank the money.
The four-armed men were traveling in a Toyota Harrier, registration number UBN 824T.
On the way to the city centre to bank the money, Sserugga branched off at Nansana-Nabweru road using a shortcut to beat traffic jam.
“When they reached around Kartel bar and Louge Nansana along Nansana Nabweru road, they were cut off by a vehicle in front of them and two people wearing army uniform stopped them and forcefully told them to open the vehicle and when they refused, they opened the behind door and removed the bag containing money,” a source told the Nile Post.
Meanwhile, the armed assailants asked the bank agent and his colleague to follow them to police but along the way, they realised the four armed men were not heading to police.
In a scene similar to ones captured in movies, the bank agent followed the assailants’ vehicle that he knocked from behind until it lost control and rammed into a trench.
Two men armed with a gun and a bag containing money got out of the vehicle and ran away.
Angry mob surrounds vehicle
Meanwhile, the community members who heard the scuffle later surrounded the vehicle and arrested the two remaining men who were dressed in army uniform and beat them severely.
By the time police intervened, one of the men could not speak whereas the second vehicle occupant, Ronald Kaweesi, 25 a driver and resident of Nansana East I A was also arrested.
Kampala Metropolitan deputy police spokesperson, Luke Owoyesigyire confirmed the incident noting that upon getting the information, police rushed to the scene where two suspects were arrested.
Whereas one is currently detained at Nansana Police Station, the second suspect is at Mulago Hospital where he is undergoing treatment.
“Investigations into the matter have kicked off and we are going to work with UPDF to get the identities of the suspects on the run,” Owoyesigyire said.
