Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda after arrest

KAMPALA- A group of leaders from the Forum for Democratic Change-FDC Katonga faction from including the Kira-Municipality legislator Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda have been arrested as they attempted to match to the Kenyan Embassy in Kampala to protest the recent abduction of Dr Kiiza Besigye in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya.

Other leaders who have been arrested according to the Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Police Spokesperson, Luke Owoyesigyire  including Faridah Nangozi, Zarica Muteesi, Hilary Atwongilwe, Norbert Kyaku, Nasuluh  Basalirwa, Abdul Bukenya,  and Ingrid Turinawe.

The protesters were advocating for the freedom of Dr. Kiiza Besigye, a Ugandan opposition politician, and were chanting slogans of freedom for all.

Owoyesigyire said the suspects have been detained by CPS on charges of being a common nuisance and participating in an unauthorized procession.

“They were attempting to march to the Kenyan Embassy to express their discontent with the ongoing arrest and prosecution of their members in Uganda. But the protesters’ actions were deemed illegal.”Owoyesigyire said.

He added: “We can only appeal to them to go through the normal procedure of working with the Police, away from that, we shall not allow any kind of processions that will disrupt the normal business of Kampala.” Owoyesigyire said.

 Dr. Kiiza Besigye and Hajj Obedi Kamulegeya were last weekend kidnapped from Nairobi where they had gone to attend a book launch of Martha Karua, a prominent opposition leader in Kenya.

They were kept at Makindye military barracks and produced to the court martial on Wednesday on charges of being in possession of firearms and got remanded to Luzira Prisons until December 2.

Their arrests came months after 36 activists associated with the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) Katonga faction were also reportedly abducted in Kisumu, Kenya, and transferred to Uganda in violation of extradition laws.

The group was recently granted bail after being charged with treason-related offenses.
