The headteacher of Musamba Primary School in Rubaya Sub-county, Ndorwa West County, Kabale District, has reportedly drowned in Lake Bunyonyi.
The deceased has been identified as Johnson Tumukunde Spensor, 45, who is said to have drowned after the canoe he was travelling in capsized on Sunday morning. Another passenger, Rebecca Ndamwesiga, 21, survived the incident and was rescued by residents. She is currently receiving treatment at Kyevu Health Centre II.
The accident reportedly occurred at about 10:00 a.m., shortly after the canoe left the Kyevu landing site.
According to Dickson Kamuhanda, the Nyombe Parish Male Councillor in Kahungye Sub-county, the two were crossing from Kyevu Village (Butanda Sub-county) to Bugo Village in Musamba Parish, Rubaya Sub-county, when the canoe overturned.
Kamuhanda explained that Ndamwesiga volunteered to help transport Tumukunde after he reportedly failed to secure another means of crossing. He added that residents quickly organized a rescue effort, successfully saving Ndamwesiga, while attempts to recover Tumukunde’s body continued.
Kabale District Communications Officer Alex Byakatonda also confirmed the incident, stating that the headteacher was reportedly crossing the lake to attend a Sunday School thanksgiving ceremony when the tragedy struck.
As of the time of reporting, police had not yet released an official statement regarding the incident.
