Sanga meat

NEWS- Kasese district authorities have launched a fresh fight against the consumption of sanga meat in an attempt to prevent the spread of anthrax that has been reported in some districts of Uganda.

The resolution was reached during an emergency District Taskforce Meeting that was aimed at forging the means of preventing anthrax, a disease that is  transmitted from animals to people or vice versa.

Anthrax outbreak was confirmed on 29th November 2023 in Kabira, Kasasa and Lwankoni sub counties of Kyotera district.

According to Mr. Justus Nayetegeza Kwezi, the Veterinary Inspector for the Western Region, Kasese is best known for consuming sanga meat because at first the traders would deal in fresh meat but later started smuggling in condemned ones after attaining trading licenses.

The constituencies that are mentioned for leading in the consumption of sanga include Bukonzo County East and West.

Mr. Stephen Bagonza, the Kasese Acting District Health Officer  says the trade of an illegal sanga meat puts the people at higher risks of contracting the disease, and suggested that it could be condemned and condemned from the district. 

Mr. Girivazio Monday Bwambale, the District Secretary for Social Services indicated that the council had passed a resolution that the condemned should be stopped. 

Kasese Municipality Mayor, Chance Kahindo observed that the Local Council III Chairpersons should be brought on board because some of them deal in the same business in their respective areas.

Rwenzori Regional Police Commander, SSP Moses Nanoka noted that as police were ready to enforce the fight against the vice from the routes that are used by the dealers and cause their arrests.

Kasese District RDC, Lt. Joe Walusimbi who heads the Taskforce Committee warned the politicians against compromising the move in their favor of votes. 

However, Dr. Yusuf Kibaya, the District Veterinary Officer noted that the district has not yet registered any cases related to the disease both in animals and human beings. He explained that the samples that they carried out from the suspected cattle tested negative.
