The Spokesperson for Alliance for National Transformation Kigezi Region Nicholas Byonanebye Kamuntu who was arrested on Monday on charges of assaulting a police officer and possession of opium has been released on bail.
Byonanebye was granted bail on Wednesday Feb 26th by the Kabale grade one magistrate John Kavuma Mugaga.
His worship Kavuma released Byonanebye on a non cash bond of two million shillings while his two sureties executed non cash bond of one million shillings each.
The sureties are Erick Kamuntu, his father and a resident of Bugararama village, Rukore Ward in Lyakarimira town council Kabale district and his friend Joshua Eliton Ainebyona, an instructor at African College of Commerce and Technology-ACCT.
Prosecution told court that while at Kabale University on Monday during Guild Leaders campaigns in Kabale municipality; Byonanebye assaulted one of the officers attached to Kabale university police post when he was stopped from entering the University premises.
Prosecution also told court that after his arrest, four sticks of opium were discovered in his bag.
Byonanebye was arrested shortly after he entered the university premises to galvanize support for his friend Henry Mbonimpa who is contesting for the guild presidency at Kabale University under People power pressure group.
Byonanebye who is also a former student of Kabale University was first detained for close to an one at Kabale university police post before he was transferred to the Kabale Central police station on orders of the Kabale District police commander.
His worship Kavuma did not allow Byonanebye a chance to take plea on the charges levied against him but granted him bail and adjourned the case to March 9th 2020 for further hearing.
Speaking to our reporter after the release, Byonanebye denied all charges against him.
