KAMPALA- As the rescue efforts at the Kiteezi garbage dump collapse site enter their 12th day, relatives of victims still trapped under the rubble are losing hope of recovering their loved ones, with 28 people still unaccounted for.
A tragic incident occurred on the 10th of this month, resulting in a devastating loss of life. As of today, only 35 bodies have been recovered, while the police investigation team reports that 28 individuals remain unaccounted for.
Heavy rainfall and flooding have impeded rescue operations at Kitetika for five consecutive days, Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson Patrick Onyango has said that more bodies may be trapped in the waterlogged area.
He said the rescue operations have resumed this afternoon after two days of creating a drainage channel, to enable water to flow out and allow the rescue efforts to safely resume.
“Still in Kitetika, we want to assure victims who lost their loved ones that, the Task Force team have not abandoned looking for your relatives, the team is first solving this emergency of flooding but be assured that when the team finishes tackling the issue of floods, they shall deploy all the earth moving equipments to Kitetika site.” Onyango said.
Some of the relatives with missing people suspect that more victims are still trapped beneath the massive pile of rubble. The distressed people are concerned that the excavators could have only scratched the surface, and potentially left more bodies buried beneath.
Meanwhile more concerned Ugandans are still bringing in aid in terms of food, bedsheets among others to the affected more than 300 residents who have sought shelter in tents erected at Kiteezi Church of Uganda Primary School playgrounds.
