Kween landslides

A devastating mudslide has struck Kaptang Village in Chepkwutus Parish in Tuikat Sub-county, Kween District today’s morning, leaving 6 people dead leaving many others displaced.

The tragedy occurred around 2 a.m. following a night of heavy rainfall that unleashed torrents of mud and debris down the slopes of Mount Elgon and among the victims are Cavin Kapkwomu, his wife Sarah and their two young children who were sleep when the landslide hit, leaving no time to escape.

Local residents have since joined by community leaders and volunteers to dig through the rubble in search of survivors and more bodies. 

This latest disaster underscores the growing vulnerability of communities living along the Mt Elgon slopes an area prone to landslides during the rainy season.

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni is expected to visit the Sebei Sub Region where he will be seeking NRM support and is expected to address the long standing issue of the residents displaced by Landslides around the Mt Elgon.
