KAMPALA- Last week on Friday, students of Makerere University school ( MUBS) celebrated their  Francophonie day and created  awareness about being multilingual as the world pushes to a global village in this digital realm.

This was also in line with theme   ” create, innovate and do business in French ” and to validate that it was a market day at the institution which really made sense.

The Dean of  Faculty of Hospitality and languages  professor  Milburga Atcero  said that as  a country  we are living unique despite the differences in our culture and diversity and through that we should express solidarity, dialogue and work together.

” When we are here we are learning and this contributes to the skills and compliments to the global economy.

It is high time to encourage multilingualism and this is  timely and forward looking because  it is a winner to trade,  innovation and this is good for the African trade” she  Added.

Professor Muhwezi Moses,  Principal MUBS noted that language   promotes, peace, unity and human rights and at the same time an enabler of commerce, innovation and they have put in place structures to support the languages.

 He also stressed that the French language is spoken  in over  5  continents and it is  very important to communicate  since it gives the community a sense of belongings.

” Our innovations should not discard our previous engagements done by our fore father but also build from them.

I studied in Holland and they speak in their local language and we should also embrace them  and it means a lot.

  You know and understand the  languages well  and you should continue doing business since it is no longer confined to borders .  Our students should not stick to french as a subject but as a bridge and a skill of communication  and understand the language deeply so that you are able to have an opinion that is rooted and helps to look at the world  at another perspective” Prof Muhwezi  Added.

  Louise Bay , Corperation  Attache Education at the French Embassy in Uganda  asserted that  we have common values  and they have other countries on board that do not speak French like  the Republic of Korea.

Dr. Agatha Tumwine,  President  Association of Teachers of French( APFO) said that it was the day they have been waiting for and it was marked clearly on their  calendar of events that has over 20 activities .

She also noted that French is not a language of France and it doesn’t show imperialism before emphasizing students  to know their indigenous language because it a their identity.

The celebrations also has various students from Bugema, International University of East Africa, Kyambogo, Makerere and others.
