NEWS- Ugandan women make up at least 8 percent of the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) serving in combat and support staff. As we celebrate the International Women’s Day, the Lionesses of Uganda Initiative dedicates its first Edition to awarding, profiling and celebrating the She-heroes of Uganda.
This comes at a time when the Ugandan government has made efforts to boost the number of women in the army with incentives like gender-sensitive training, a zero-tolerance policy against discrimination, establishing a gender desk for gender-related issues, and promoting them to positions of leadership.
‘We applaud the efforts of the Government of Uganda in building a formidable security force that has kept our country peaceful and secure. As the Lionesses of Uganda, we are committed to spotlighting the sacrifices of our mothers and sisters in keeping the country safe’ says Patience Atusaasire, Founder of the Lionesses of Uganda Initiative.
This May 2024, we launch the 1st ever event, the first of its kind in Uganda and Africa at large that will happen annually to appreciate the Women in the Military, Police, Prisons and the Private Security companies in partnership with the Ministry of Defence, the Uganda Police, the Uganda Prisons and the Uganda Private Security Companies Association (TUPSA).
The Women Peace and Security Resolution was passed by the United Nations, and as we commemorate International Women’s Day, we join the world in celebrating the contribution on women in conflict resolution, peace and security.
The Lionesses of Uganda presents an opportunity for the Private sector to give back to the women that are our unsung She-heroes.
