KAMPALA- The Police at Wandegeya Station are investigating a fire outbreak that occurred on Monday morning at approximately 1:46 a.m. at Kalerwe Market.
The fire according to Kampala Metropolitan area Deputy Police Spokesman ASP Luke Owoyesigyire is believed to have started on the east end of the market along Gayaza Road, spreading rapidly and destroying several wooden stalls.
The Fire Prevention and Rescue Services responded promptly and successfully contained the fire.
While investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause, preliminary findings suggest that the fire may have resulted from electrical sparks caused by illegal power connections and installations in the market’s kiosks.
The Police now urge Umeme to conduct regular inspections of electrical connections, particularly in wooden structures.
“We also recommend that all electrical installations in kiosks and shops be carried out by certified professionals to prevent similar incidents” said Owoyesigyire.
According to Police, no injuries or fatalities have been reported.
“Further details will be shared as the investigation continues” added Owoyesigyire
