KAMPALA- The Minister of ICT and National Guidance Hon Dr Chris Baryomunsi on Tuesday morning launched the 2024 data privacy campaign at the Uganda Media Centre where he urged Ugandans to be vigilant before logging into any social media platform.
The Data Privacy campaign month 2024 running under the theme, “Stop. Think. Own Privacy” which will culminate into commemoration of Data Privacy Day happening on 31st January 2024.
The Data Protection act of Parliament was enacted in 2019 and later in 2021 the Ministry of ICT and National Guidance with NITA Uganda developed and gazetted the Data Protection and Privacy regulations which were aimed at comprehensively and adequately providing for the safeguarding of the Privacy of Personal data of Ugandans
While speaking at the same event, the Executive Director of National Personal Data Protection under the Ministry of Information, Technology and National Guidance, Ms Stella Alibateese said that most Ugandans rush and sign in terms of various social media platforms and end up losing their privacy when the said platforms release their private information.
She advised Ugandans to embrace the Data Protection and Privacy Act whose terms urges Ugandans to protect their data by regulating the collection and processing of personal information and provides for the rights of the persons whose data is collected and regulates the use or disclosure of personal information among others.
Among the penalties for those who breach the law include being jailed for 3-10 years or a fine of 2% of the gross annual revenue depending on the nature of the case.
