The Minister of ICT and National Guidance Hon Dr. Chris Baryomunsi has withdrawn from the NRM election at District level where he intended to contest for position of Publicity Secretary which he had already won on lower levels in his Sub county.
The withdrawal of Minister Baryomunsi from the race leaves 3 contenders for the post of Publicity Secretary and these include Publicity Lawyer Akampurira Godfrey wa Karuma from Kirima Sub County, Karame Deus from Kihihi Sub-county and Elias Kanyonza from Kayonza Sub-county.
It should be remembered that on 6th May 2025, when the NRM grassroot election started at village level, Minister Baryomunsi rushed to his village in a helicopter and was elected unopposed at the village level.
However, Minister Baryomunsi who was a top contender for the position of the Publicity Secretary at Kanungu District NRM Mainstream Structures, has taken to Social Media and said that he will not be contesting for the position
“I thank those who prepared this poster announcing that I will be contesting in the NRM elections at the district level. I did not authorise this but presumably, the authors did it in good faith, I usually want to leave space for the various contenders at the district since i will be vying for a national position in the party. In Kayungwe, they insisted on electing me on the structures even in my absence. For anybody to think that I feared other competitors like Akampa, that is just day dreaming. I can get any position that i want at the district but its not my desire. Cheers” Minister Baryomunsi wrote.
Kanungu District NRM Mainstream is hotly contested and all the positions are being competed for with the Chairmanship being the most sought with 4 people expressing their interest and these include Charles Asiimwe Bamuhata from Kirima Sub county, Peter Mugisha from Kambuga Sub-county, Caleb Tumwesimire Kipande from Mpungu Sub-county and the incumbent Godfrey Karabenda from Kanungu Town Council.
The position for the General Secretary is being competed by Kenneth Tumuhamye from Kanyantorogo Sub-county, Turyatuga Alex from Kihembe Sub-county, Mayanja Rashid from Kihihi Sub-county, Tumwesigye Rodgers from Kihihi Town Council, Mukiza Mendrick from Kanyantorogo Sub-county and Byaruhanga Frank from Mpungu Sub-county.
So far only two women have expressed interest in the position of Vice chairperson and they include Nyiramahoro Shamila from Kihihi Town Council and the current Kanungu District Deputy Speaker Madam Lorika while the position of the Finance Secretary is being sought by Biryomumeisho Rehema from Butogota Town Council.
