NEWS– Sorrows and heartrending wails befell residents in St Mulumba Zone in Mayuge Town Council on Monday morning, July 15th 2024 as a 7 year old missing girl was found dead in a pond.

Ms. Zahara Namulondo, a bubbly 7-year-old adored by the village, lay dead in their wake, with signs of rape adding to the grief in the village.

The body of the top-class pupil at Canani Nursery and Primary School was found in a pond after she went missing on Sunday evening.

Namulondo was daughter of Bitamisi Nansera and Sadat Tigawalana, resident of Namakakale Village in Luuka District.

The Top Class kindergarten pupil has been living with her mother Nansera in St Mulumba Zone after her the separation of her parents.

According to Hadijjah Kantono, a resident, Nansera had sent her daughter to fetch water at 6:30pm, but she never returned.

A search party was formed, and announcements were made to the entire village, but she could not be found. A report was later made at Mayuge Police Station, and a search operation was launched.

The body was discovered in a pond near Mandela Nursery and Primary School in Budhebela, a neighbouring village, with signs of rape.

The police, led by District Police Commander Irene Achieng, recovered the body and took it to Mayuge Health Centre IV for a post-mortem examination.

The community is in shock and outrage, with area councillor Isaac Owori expressing concern over the increasing criminality in the area.

He criticised the UPDF operatives deployed to secure the community, alleging them to have resorted to molesting monies from suspected criminals than enforcing the law.

“The UPDF was brought to ensure that people are secure but we are dismayed with their acts of collecting money from suspects and letting them free,” Owori said.

He called on Mayuge Resident District Commissioner Elijah Madoi to intervene and restore peace in the area.

The police have launched an investigation into the matter, and the community is waiting with bated breath for the perpetrators to be brought to book.
