The NRM Electoral Commission has mandated the Mitooma District NRM Electoral Commission to conduct elections today, May 30, 2025, to fill four remaining positions in the NRM mainstream. This decision follows the previous abortive election exercise, which was marred by violence.
In the recent election, Moses Tumwekwatse emerged victorious as the district chairman, garnering 349 votes against the incumbent Wilberforce Byaboneka, who received 297 votes. Byaboneka’s refusal to accept the results led to unrest, prompting NRM Electoral Commission Chairman Dr. Tang Odoi to suspend the electoral process until further notice.
In a letter addressed to Mitooma District registrar Ephraim Kyabakama, Dr. Odoi directed the organization of elections at the constituency level today. Delegates will gather in their respective constituencies—Ruhinda South, Ruhinda North, and Ruhinda—to elect key positions, including vice chairperson, general secretary, secretary for publicity, and finance secretary.
Ephraim Kyabakama confirmed the receipt of the directive and reassured that the office is prepared for the elections. He emphasized that security measures are in place to protect all candidates and delegates amid ongoing threats from various individuals.
