NEWS- Leaders in Mitooma district have been asked to take lead in the fight for wetland restoration since they have the power and respect from the people they lead.

The call was made by Benon Karyeija, the Mitooma district chairperson in an entry meeting with a team from Green Climate Fund and Ministry of Water and Environment who are in the district to assess the ongoing wetland restoration activity. The meeting was held at district headquarters in Mitooma district.

Karyeija noted that most wetlands are occupied by leaders and other officials who should be the key people preaching the gospel of restoration, hence a need to start on maintaining what is there and restoring what has been lost.

According to Okurutu David, a commissioner from the Ministry of Water and Environment, they have been working with Green climate Fund and other partners for the last six years to ensure wetland restoration is realized.

Okurut stressed that they have been doing this through sensitizing people to leave wetlands and engage in other activities that can generate them income without harming wetlands.
