NEWS- The residents of Murama village in Kiganda Parish, Nyakishenyi Sub County in Rukungiri District were on Saturday morning, January 27th 2024 left in grief as they retrieved two dead bodies of a mother and her child who drowned in River Birara.
According to the witness identified as Yeremiya Kakyebonaho, the deceased woman Tugabirwe Annet and her child Ainembabazi Shanitta drowned on Friday night as they crossed River Birara after a heavy downpour.
Kakyebonaho said that the bodies were on Saturday morning discovered in the river, retrieved and were taken for burial.
The unfortunate incident has however left shock waves in the area and the residents are calling on the government to construct a bridge at the spot where the two people drowned to stop such incidents in future.
By the time of filing this story, the Police was yet to issue a report about the issue.
Nyakishenyi Sub county Chairman Wednesday Twinomujuni described the incident as very unfortunate but said that he will engage the district authorities to ensure that something is done so that such incidents are minimized.
