Opposition MPs boycott Gulu Parliamentary sitting

GULU- Mityana south county Member of Parliament Richard Lumu has sought leave of Parliament to draft amendments into the Administration of Parliament Act to cause vote for Leader of opposition and opposition whip in Parliament.

Lumu wants the leader of opposition and the opposition chief whip voted for by all opposition parties from the current procedure where the main opposition party names the leader of Opposition and the Chief whip too. His motion has been seconded by the Entebbe Municipality legislator Michael Kakembo.

Lumu’s bill has featured at the time when all the leader of Opposition boycotted the ongoing regional sitting citing extravagance and other irregular costs to the sittings.

The legislator noted that since every five years they elect the speaker of parliament and the deputy, there is no reason as to why they don’t elect the leader of opposition and the opposition chief whip so that he can be answerable to all MPs in the opposition than being only answerable to his or her party.

The seconder of the motion Micheal Kakembo of Entebbe municipality noted that the move by Richard Lumu has been brought in good faith with intentions of uniting and making the opposition in Parliament very strong instead of working for one party.

However, a number of MPs including Okin Ojara representing Chwa west and Kitgum Municipality MP Nakalit Dennis opposed the initiative describing it as personal wars between the mover and the current leader of Opposition which should not be anchored in the national laws

However, the speaker of Parliament Anita Among insisted that Mityana south MP Richard Lumu has a right to seek leave of Parliament and their no fault in his attempt.
