KAMPALA- Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa has blocked a debate by Members of Parliament on the money charged by the new contractor operating the Parliamentary Canteen, saying such a move would be a tantamount to Lawmakers, overstepping their mandate in the guise of fighting corruption within Parliament.
This followed a section of Members of Parliament led by Aringa South MP Allioni Yorke Odria expressing unhappiness over the increased cost of food in the parliamentary canteen.
Allion sparked the debate on the cost of food for MPs which displeased the Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa while presiding over the parliament plenary sitting, as he described the subject unworthy of Parliamentary debate.
Parliament switched contractor for the parliamentary canteen in a move that caused the increment in food cost with a plate of food originally at Ugx13,000 now costing Ugx 21,000 which the legislators says is too high.
