KAMPALA- Former leader of Opposition and Commissioner of Parliament Mathias Mpuuga has declined calls from the DP block to front him for presidency in the forthcoming General Elections.
Mpuuga notes that Uganda’s current political terrain requires a lot of amendments in the electoral laws to draw fair and balanced ground if a genuine election is to happen.
The DP blocker team has called on Mpuuga to warm-up for a presidential race with their support to have it actualized. He is planning to meet the group to digest the matter deeper and address themselves on the different aspects of their proposal.
As he explains while addressing journalists at parliament on his proposals for constitutional and electoral reforms: “Firstly I know those friends of mine and I want to thank them for thinking about me. But I am content with what we’re currently doing, to have the electoral reforms tabled and passed in.” Mpuuga said.
He has further explained that he will have time to meet the DP block and discuss ways forward on how they can help us to register a success in having these reforms passed.” Mpuuga added.
Mpugu explains that once electoral reforms are passed, any Ugandan with potential can stand and win a free and fair election to lead Uganda, but without that, there is no hope for a free and fair election. According to him, among the reforms, he wants the presidential term limits reinstated, reducing the parliament numbers OF MPs, Ugandans in Diaspora and those in prison, be allowed to participate in elections come 2026.
The Honourable Mathias Mpuuga, former leader of opposition (LOP) in parliament was suspended by his National Unity Platform President Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu alias Bobi-Wine on allegations of participating in corruption related scandals of rewarding themselves receiving UGX 500 million in service awards.
However, the NUP Deputy President for Buganda, Mathias Mpuuga was exonerated by High Court after ruling that there was any criminal responsibility in receiving UGX 500 million in service awards, along with several other parliamentary commissioners. However, Kyagulanyi says the move to hand service awards to Mpuuga amounted to a failure in morals.
