NEWS- The Kampala Metropolitan Police are currently probing a string of robberies targeting motorists along the Northern Bypass, allegedly carried out by organized groups of criminals.
The first reported incident occurred at 6:00 am on Saturday, involving Sulain Wagaba, a resident of Kiwatule’s central zone, who was assaulted and is now receiving treatment at China Naguru Hospital.
According to Luke Owoyesigyire, Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Police Spokesperson, Kira Road Police officers responded to a simultaneous attack on Wannie Masibo, who was enroute to her workplace at Frain Supermarket in Ntinda. The assailants assaulted her, making off with her phone and a bag containing vital documents.
During the pursuit of the suspects, two individuals were identified. Rwothomio Jonathan, one of the suspects, was fatally shot in an exchange with the responding team, while his alleged accomplice fled the scene with the stolen items and remains at large.
Initial police investigations indicate that the deceased suspect, Rwothomio Jonathan, was released on bail and had pending charges for store breaking and theft, related to case Kiwatule.
The body of the deceased has been transferred to City Mortuary Mulago for autopsy and further examination. Masibo Winnie, the attack victim, is currently receiving medical attention for her injuries, after temporarily losing consciousness during the incident.
The Northern Bypass robberies mark a troubling trend, as Kampala grapples with a rising tide of criminal activity, fueled by organized gangs. Motorcycles have become a modus operandi for some perpetrators, targeting vulnerable victims on the city’s streets.
