Thomas Tayebwa smiles after picking the nomination forms

A total of 795 aspirants have so far picked NRM nomination forms to contest for Parliamentary and District Chairperson positions across the country, as the party’s internal elections enter a crucial phase.

The picking of nomination forms was officially kickstarted yesterday by the Vice President Maj Jesca Alupo Epel, who arrived at the NRM Secretariat as early as 8:00 am to pick forms to retain her seat as Katakwi Woman Member of Parliament.

The NRM Electoral Commission Chairman Dr Tanga Odoi said that the Vice President move set the tone for what turned out to be a highly active first day, with hundreds of aspirants following suit.

By close of business yesterday, daily returns from the NRM Electoral Commission showed that 427 aspirants had picked forms for Directly Constituency MP, 210 for District Woman MP, and 144 for LC V Chairperson positions and Special Interest Groups MPs saw 14 aspirants pick forms making a combined total of 795 under the main categories.

The NRM grassroots elections kicked off on May 6th, starting with village-level leadership, and have now progressed to the primaries for parliamentary and district flagbearers, ahead of the July 16th election date for parliamentary flagbearers.
