KAMPALA– News coming in through our news desk indicates that Mrs. Jolly Kyomugasho Mugisha, the Deputy President of the National Unity Platform (NUP) for Western Uganda, is dead.
Mugisha died at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital on Monday afternoon where she has been admitted for some weeks.
NUP party president Robert Kyagulanyi, aka Bobi Wine, announced the sad news through his x account formally Twitter.
“It’s with great sadness that I announce the passing of Hon. Jolly Mugisha, the National Unity Platform Deputy President for Western Uganda. Mama Jolly has passed on this afternoon from Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital where she has been admitted in a coma for several weeks. Mama Jolly will always be remembered as a true Ugandan heroine. Other communication will be made in due course” said Kyagulanyi.
He added “Rest in perfect peace, comrade Maama!”
Born in Buhanama, Itojo Sub County in Ntungamo District, Kyomugasho has been a social worker by training and a politician by conviction.
She has been the Deputy President of the National Unity Platform (NUP), the leading opposition political party in Uganda. She joined NUP in July 2020 and was appointed to head the party in Western Uganda, the area which is home to the majority of leaders and founders of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) including the president. She has been also the vice chair of Uganda’s National Consultative forum for all registered Political Parties and organizations (N.C.F), where she was representing her party.
Her passion for social change against injustices started at an early age inspired by the inherent patriarchal biases that defined her society where, she is the only one among her six sisters who went to school and completed education without being pulled out for marriage, free manual labour, discrimination, and other gender stereotypes that affected girl children at the time.
