KAMPALA- The National Unity Platform (NUP) candidate, Elias Luyimbaazi Nalukoola, has been declared the winner of the hotly contested Kawempe North by-election in Kampala City.
Lawyer Nalukoola polled 17,764 votes to beat his closet rival of the ruling National Resistancw Movement party candidate Ms Faridah Nambi who got 8,593 votes during the results announced by the Electoral Commission at their tally centre at Makerere University.
The returning officer for Kampala District, Henry Makabayi declared that having added up the votes cast as recorded on each declaration form in accordance with section 72 of the Parliamentary Elections Act Cap 177, Erias Nalukoola who has who has obtained the highest number of votes to be the elected candidate for Kawempe North constituency.
The declaration of Nalukoola was the climax of an election marred by violence especially against journalists, most of whom were badly beaten and others kidnapped by security agencies.
Journalists have since announced a boycott of all activities of UPDF and Police until further notice.
Other candidates scored Engena Maitum an independent got 22, Kasacca Henry Mubiru of DP got 100, Luwemba Luswa got 250, Mukibi Sadati of FDC got 239, Hanifa Karadi got 391, Musiitwa Ismail got 39, Mutazindwa Muhamood got 139 and Nsereko Moses got 32.
