KAMPALA– The Opposition in Parliament has distanced itself from the Regional Parliamentary sittings that are going to be held in different parts of Uganda, describing the Ugx 5billion budgeted for each of these sittings as wastage of taxpayers’ money.
The team’s position has been made by Joel Ssenyonyi, Leader of Opposition, during a press briefing at Parliament saying the Opposition has been sidelined from the process, whose concept can’t be both logically and financially explained to their voters, thus prompting the team to shun the process.

Ssenyonyi also decried the secrecy surrounding the organization of regional parliamentary sittings arguing that at the time the pronouncement was made by the Speaker in June 2024, he wrote to her seeking clarification on the whole process.
He adds that he expressed the need to have the issue of regional parliaments be discussed by both the Parliamentary Commission and Business Committee, but his pleas were rebuffed and instead, meetings are being held without the involvement of the Opposition.

The Leader of Opposition warned that the continued involvement of Parliament in activities that are wastage of taxpayers’ money will attract further insults from the public, given complaints of corruption and abuse of office against the Legislators.
He wondered why these funds can’t be availed to the Committees to carry out their oversight roles.

Hon Ssenyonyi adds that medical interns are protesting because they aren’t being deployed, due financial problems yet parliament is wasting funds that would have gone to this.
