NEWS- A football match between Nyanja and Kanjobe at Nyanja Playground Maziba Sub County has sparked controversy in the Ndorwa East constituency, Kabale district.
The event, organised by Counsel Elvis Twenda, was meant to bring the community together, but it was marred by allged actions of Dr. Protazio Begumisa, who is also vying for the parliamentary seat.
Dr. Begumisa’s decision to attend the event and attempt to hijack the attention of the attendees was widely criticized by local leaders and residents who expressed displeasure, urging Dr. Begumisa to focus on organising his own events instead of undermining the activities of other candidates.
To make matters worse, Dr. Begumisa was seen handing out 50,000 shillings to some of the players and attendees, a move that was perceived as a desperate attempt to buy support.
The locals, led by Gabriel Tumwesigye, former LC2 chairman, and Prossy Ngabirano, LC3 vice chairperson, condemned Dr. Begumisa’s actions, saying they were unacceptable and unbecoming of a candidate.
This situation highlights the competitive nature of the local political landscape and the importance of maintaining respect among candidates. Counsel Twenda, who is also contesting for the Ndorwa East parliamentary seat, has gained significant support from the locals, which is seen as a threat to other candidates, particularly those from the NRM party.
It’s worth noting that Dr. Begumisa has a history of controversy, having previously challenged the election victory of Wilfred Niwagaba in court, alleging bribery and falsification of results.
In a significant move, Counsel Elvis Twenda used the occasion to clear the air, stating that he was never brought into the political scene by Hon. Wilfred Niwagaba, the current Ndorwa East MP, thereby establishing his independence and credibility as a candidate.
