NEWS- Rukungiri- A total of 250 opposition members in the sub- counties of Nyarushanje, Nyakishenyi all in Rubabo county Rukungiri district have defected opposition joining the National Resistance Movement (NRM) government.
They were welcomed by the National Resistance Movement (NRM) chairperson for Rukungiri district who is also the Minister for Security Hon. Maj. Gen. Jim Muhwezi.
Speaking during the function held at Nyakishenyi and Nyarushanje Sub County headquarters respectively yesterday, Minister Jim Muhwezi attributed the ever-growing number of people joining the NRM party to the long track record of service delivery to the people.
“Over the years, we have seen people crossing to NRM because they have realized that other parties are empty and have nothing to offer’’ Minister Muhwezi said.
Minister Muhwezi said the mass defection of opposition members reflects a strong endorsement of the NRM’s achievements in governance, particularly in.
‘’ You took a right decision to switch allegiance to the ruling party. So go mobilize more for the benefit of the country and am urging you to embrace government programs aimed at eradicating poverty at household levels including Parish Development Model (PDM), Emyooga, and Youth Livelihood Funds among others’’. Minister Muhwezi added.
He also urged them to stay away from divisive politics since they won’t advance the nation.
The Rukungiri district Woman Member of Parliament, Hon. Midius Natukunda Kaharata appreciated all the converts for taking a right decision to join a party that stands for right ideologies.
‘’ Thank you for coming home because the NRM government and President Museveni have created a peaceful environment for development that Ugandans should not take for granted when choosing their leaders,’’ She said.
The woman Member of Parliament lauded President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni for his efforts in empowering women whom she said were neglected by the previous regimes.
The Rukungiri district Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Nsubuga Bewayo Stephen asked the converts and Ugandans at large to take advantage of peace brought by the NRM government and work hard for their well-being.
Bosco Rwanjugu and Byamugisha Victor speaking on behalf of converts announced that they are officially crossing to the NRM party saying that they have seen the light and realized the FDC top leadership deceived them.
Mobilization efforts to convert the opposition members, mostly from the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) , were spearheaded by Mr. Sezi Turinawe and Kokunda Julius.
The function was graced by chairperson Lc5 Rukungiri Mr. Geoffrey Kyomukama, former RDC Can. Bwagyi Ruronga, DISO and his Deputy Rukungiri, Nyakishenyi and Nyarushanje Sub County leaderships among others.
