NEWS– Three Senior six students of Kigezi High school who had been remanded to Ndorwa Government prison have finally been released on bail.

The students who included Jophas Owoyesiga, 19 years a resident of Rwamucucu in Rukiga district, 20 year old Hosea Kwetegyeka, a resident of Nyaruhenga village in Kanungu district and Lucky Ainebyoona, 20 year old resident of Rwamagara in Kabale district had on Wednesday 11th June, 2024 been remanded over bullying and harming their colleague and fellow student of the same school Anslem Akampurira.

The trio had been remanded to the above mentioned Government prison following their charge before the Kabale Grade one magistrate Julius Mutabazi.

However, the three have on 13th June 2024 been released on bail by the same Grade one Magistrate after a positive ruling on their earlier bail application

It is alleged that the trio and others still at large on 23th November, 2023 caused body grievous harm on Anslem Akampurira also a student of Kigezi High School.

Prosecution, led by Noeline Nagayi, informed the court, presided over by His Worship Julius Mutabazi, that Japhas Owoyesiga (19), Hosea Kwetegyeka (20), Lucky Ainebyoona (20), and others still at large, caused grievous bodily harm to Anselm Akampurira, a Senior Five student at Kigezi High School.

The incident occurred on November 23, 2023, at Kigezi High School in Kabale Municipality, contrary to Section 219 of the Penal Code Act according to His worship Mutabazi.

Appearing before the court on Thursday, the suspects presented sureties and requested bail. His Worship Mutabazi granted them cash bail of UGX 500,000 each and a non-cash bail of UGX 5 million. He advised the school administration to monitor students closely to prevent such incidents and encouraged the parents of both the victim and the suspects to reconcile and settle the matter out of court. The case was adjourned to July 18, 2024.

Meanwhile, Gashom Muhigane, the victim’s father, urged the suspects’ parents to cover the victim’s medical bills and requested the court to expedite the case for justice. Muhigane also revealed that he has filed a civil suit against Kigezi High School to Kabale High Court for failure to care for the children, seeking UGX 70 million in compensation.
