KAMPALA- The Prime Minister, Robinah Nabbanja, has called on East African leaders to strengthen local governments to enhance their role in the EAC integration agenda, emphasizing the need to improve the quality of life for citizens across the region.

Speaking at the East African Local Government Forum (EALGF) meeting at Speke Resort Convention Centre, Munyonyo, the Prime Minister highlighted the importance of inclusive policies to drive productivity, trade, and regional stability.

Nabanja also emphasized expanding markets and ensuring stability, reiterating the role of the EAC in fostering large markets and trade opportunities while maintaining peace and stability.

Uganda’s Minister for Local Government and the incoming EALGF Chair, Raphael Magyezi, highlighted the critical role of local governments in regional development. He emphasized improving service delivery, enhancing gender equality, and tackling challenges such as inadequate funding, weak public-private partnerships, and staffing issues.

Hon. Magyezi also underscored the need for innovative solutions to mitigate climate change, which threatens livelihoods across the region. Under the theme “Promoting Inclusivity and Effective Participation of Sub-national Governments and Communities in the EAC Integration Agenda”, the forum brought together regional leaders to reflect on policies and address challenges hindering the growth of local governments.
