NEWS- President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni who is also the National Chairman of the National Resistance Movement on Friday held a meeting with the party’s secretariat leadership led by the Secretary General Hon Richard Todwong at State House Entebbe.
Hon Todwong and team briefed the President on preparations for the upcoming internal party elections and how they are mobilising logistics to ensure that it becomes successful.
Meanwhile the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Central Executive Committee (CEC) on the same day held a meeting and resolved to defer the discussion on Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba’s presidential ambitions in the 2026 general election to President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.
The NRM Central Executive Committee meeting took place at Mosa Courts in Kampala and was chaired by the First Vice Chairman of the party Alhaji Moses Kigongo and members resolved that any discussion on the 2026 elections be halted until the President, who is the party chairman makes a decision on the matter.
The NRM top organ meeting was responding to a petition by some NRM members led by presidential advisor David Mafabi regarding the formation of the Patriotic League of Uganda, which is headed by Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba.
“We members of CEC have today 23rd of February 2024 converged to meet the national vice chairman Alhaji Moses Kigongo at Mosa Courts for consultation and it was unanimously agreed that the tentative NRM road map activities 2024 to 2026 be stayed until CEC meets to make an input,” the committee said in a press statement signed by Moses Kigongo.
While the brains behind Patriotic League of Uganda insist it is a civic movement formed to promote patriotism in Uganda, some NRM members claim that the ruling party supporters have been appointed to senior positions, something they say is bound to create confusion in the party ahead of the 2026 polls.
Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba has since announced plans to contest for presidency in the 2026 polls and attracted the support of historicals, serving Cabinet Ministers and Members of Parliament.
During the same meeting, the NRM Central Executive Committee members expressed their displeasure on designations of Commissioners of Parliament, leadership of the seasonal and standing committees of Parliament which were made without input of CEC in contravention of the rules of procedure for the NRM parliamentary caucus.
The meeting also decided that a vote be allocated to the Central Executive Committee out of Government funds disbursed to the NRM, to be vested in the National Vice Chairman for management and administration for party activities and accountability.
