KAMPALA– President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has today received the Executive Director of the World Food Programme Ms Cindy McCain at State House Entebbe where they discussed Uganda Refugee situation and long term solutions for sustainable support.
During the meeting President Museveni and Ms McCain addressed the need for reinforcing aid to go the most vulnerable refugee population with a focus on children and women.
The meeting comes at a backdrop when humanitarian funding for refugee operations is dwindling globally and both the Government of Uganda and International Partners are under pressure to find innovative ways to bridge gaps in food security and basic services.
Bearing this in mind, the government of Uganda through the Ministry of Gender Labour and Social Development launched a pilot project to deliver cash transfers to the elderly refugees with support from the International partners who include World Food Programme and the Ireland Embassy in Uganda.
Relatedly, the Deputy Speaker of the Parliament of Uganda Rt Hon Thomas Tayebwa has called on Ugandan businesses to embrace the strategy of growing the African free continental trade area in order to overcome international challenges of doing business caused by word super powers.
Rt Tayebwa asked Ugandans to form trade partnerships, embrace the concept of Agriculture tourism and minerals of growing Uganda’s economy beyond Ugx 55 billion.
The Deputy Speaker was earlier today speaking at the opening ceremony of the 8th Annual Insolvency Conference which aims at Balancing Financial Stability, Recovery and Investment Strategies, organised by the Uganda registration service Bureau.
The conference us organised under the theme “A resilient Insolvency regine:Balancing Financial Stability, Recovery and Investment Strategies “.
The Registrar General of Uganda Registration Services Bureau, Ms Mercy Kainobwisho said that the conference will help both government and all stake holders discuss challenges affecting the businesses and possible solutions which may include funding and access to financing.

In another news, the Prime Minister of Uganda Rt Hon Robinah Nabbanja has today met Ms the Regional Director for UNFPA East and Southern Africa Ms Lydia Zigoma at the sidelines of the ongoing 11th Session of the Africa Regional Forum on Sustainable Development at the Speke Resort Convention Centre in Munyonyo in Kampala.
The Prime Minister and her guest discussed a wide range of issues including addressing the challenge of teenage pregnancies, the dwindling support to the refugees at a time when the number of Refugees hosted in Uganda has gone up to over 1.9m people and ways of strengthening partnership.
Ms Zigoma lauded Uganda’s open door policy to refugees and promised to support the country in addressing the challenges it is facing in the process of hosting refugees.
The meeting was also attended by the Minister for Relief Disaster Preparedness and Refugees Eng Hillary Onek and other high ranking government officials.
